INISTIOGE COUNTY KILKENNY

kilkenny_map.gif (2188 bytes)

Inistioge is Centrally located it is two hours from Dublin on the N9 and 30 minutes from both Kilkenny and Waterford cities. Also we are only two hours also from Cork City. Kilkenny City is a beautiful city for shopping with several boutiques and the Kilkenny design centre which has all the local crafts for sale all under the one roof. The centre is located opposite Kilkenny castle which is open to the public and a tour of the castle is a must.

In Thomastown which is 10 minutes from Inistioge is Mount Juliet, venue to the World Golf Championship - American Express Championship in 2002 & 2004, which was won by "Tiger Woods" and "Ernie Els". Mount Juliet also held the Irish Open for a number of years. Within 30 minutes drive there is no less than 12 other golf courses.

There are only two festivals running at present, the Vintage Rally which brings vintage cars, bikes and machinery from the four corners of Ireland. it is held on the Sunday of the August Bank Holiday Week-End. There is also a festival of Motor Sport held by the Wexford Motor Club. This takes the form of a Hill-Climb, where the cars are put through their paces racing up the Hill past Woodstock Gates.

The River Nore flows through the village and is tidal up to the village. The fishing is generally good and a licence can be had easily from the local fishing club at a small charge. Salmon and Trout are the most common catch.

The Film Circle of Friends and Widow's Peak were made in the village in 1993 and 1994. Bringing such movie stars as Mia Farrow, Chris O'Donnell, Minnie Driver, Adrian Dunbar, Joan Plymouth and our very own Mick Lally. Photographs from these films are on display in our bar.

Woodstock Park, now the subject of massive restoration with aid from the E.U. and FAS. The Gardens and forest of Woodstock Estate are presently part of the Tighe Estate. The forest is currently under a long term lease to Coillet Teoranta, the State forestry Company which has sole responsibility for its management. The Gardens however are under the guidance of Kilkenny Country Council. The house at Woodstock was built in 1745 by Francis Bindon, Woodstock House was an important seat in County Kilkenny for over 150 years. The estate at its prime was well over 1600 acres now its a little over 1000. The estate is filled with walks through the gardens which measure some 50 acres. In this you will find a vast array of plants, shrubs and trees many of which are not native to this country e.g. a masterful Californian Red Wood and the longest monkey puzzle walk in Europe.
