SLIGO PLACES TO VISIT

Foxford Woolen Mills & Visitors Centre

Co. Mayo
Imagine a unique and thriving woolen mill set in the wild and rugged West of Ireland, famous worldwide for its rugs and tweeds, and blankets. Take the industrial tour and experience the sights, sounds and smells of this 19th century woolen mill. Afterwards relax in the comfortable restaurant and browse through the impressive mill shop.

The Michael Davitt Museum

(Straide, Foxford)
Michael Davitt was the founder of the Land League. The museum contains an extensive collection of documents, photos, Land Acts, letters, postcards, posters and other items connected with Davitt's life. There is also the excellent audio-visual which enhances the exhibition and guided tours are available.



Knock Shrine & Folk Museum

Co. Mayo
On 22 August 1879 fifteen local people saw a vision of Mary the Mother of Christ. Two church commissions examined the claim- "The claim was 'trustworthy and satisfactory'". Now Knock Shrine is one of the major Marian Shrines of the world.
Knock Folk Museum documents the story of the Knock Apparition of 1879 and places it in the context of the lifestyle of the people, their traditions and customs at the time.

Céide Fields

Co. Mayo
The Céide Fields, Ballycastle are the oldest known field systems in the world, over five and a half millennia old. It is a unique Neolithic landscape of world importance, which has changed our perception of our Stone Age ancestors. The remains of stone field walls, houses and megalithic tombs are preserved beneath a blanket of peat over several square miles. The multi-award winning Centre has exhibitions, audio-visual show and tearooms.

Seaweed Baths

Enjoy hot sea water, seaweed and steam health baths which are relaxing, therapeutic, natural and pure. The iodine is said to help rheumatism and arthritis.

Ceoláras Coleman

Gurteen, Co. Sligo
A community based project with a theatre, a large audio visual display on south Sligo: it's music, and the life of Michael Coleman. Traditional music classes and a shop selling CDs and tapes. Traditional music every Wednesday and Saturday night in peak season.

Coleman Heritage Centre

Gurteen, Co. Sligo
This consists of a replica of the original Coleman home and a traditional style forge. There is an archive, the most comprehensive collection of Sligo traditional music and song in existence.

Sligo Agricultural Museum & Rural Heritage Park

Riverstown, Co. Sligo
The museum houses a variety of agricultural artifacts, a library, plus a reference archive of documents, manuscripts etc. relating to the area. There is a reconstruction of a crannóg and two bird hides in the 5.5 acre park.



Drumcliff Church & Visitors Centre


Drumcliff, Co. Sligo
A important monastery was founded here by St Columcille in 574 . One of the most important battles of Irish history was fought in the middle of the 6th Century on the banks of the Drumcliffe river. The is an audio visual presentation about this in the church.
Drumcliffe is best known as the final resting place of the poet William Butler Yeats. His grave can be visited in the Church graveyard.



Carrowmore

Co. Sligo
Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery is the largest Megalithic Cemetery in Ireland, and amongst the most important in Europe. Archaeologists have dated the tombs from 4840-4370 BC. It appears that the tombs were reused at a later date.



Sligo Abbey

Sligo Town
Known locally as the Abbey, this Dominican Friary was founded in the mid-13th century by Maurice FitzGerald. The site contains a great wealth of carvings dated from the 15th century and is well worth a visit.



Parke's Castle

Co. Leitrim
A 17th century fortified manor house which has recently been restored using Irish oak and traditional craftsmenship. The courtyard contains the foundations and features of an earlier defensive structure.
