CAHIR

 

The Heritage Town of  Cahir in county Tipperary  is situated in a delightful setting on the River Suir at the eastern end of the Galtee Mountains. Cahir Castle is sited here which is one of of Ireland's largest and best preserved castles. The Swiss Cottage is a delightful 'cottage orne' situated on the estate of the Earl of Glengall off the Ardfinnan Road. This area is also the location of the world famous 'Mitchelstown Cave', situated midway between Cahir and Mitchelstown.
 

PLACES TO VISIT

Cahir Castle
Once the stronghold of the powerful Butler family, the castle retains its impressive keep, tower and much of its original defensive structure. It is one of Ireland's largest and best preserved castles. It is situated on a rocky island on the River Suir. The castle's attractions include an excellent audio-visual show which informs visitors of all the main sites of the area. There are several exhibitions


Cahir Town Park

Location: 1 km from town of Cahir.
Facilities: Car park, picnic site, river walks and fishing. There are also walks to a Swiss cottage and there is pony trekking in the wood.
Length of Trail: There are walks of approximately 2km in length which link up with the Cahir Town Heritage and Nature Trails and also forms part of the Tipperary Heritage Way, which was created in 2000.
Habitat: The area is situated beside the River Suir and comprises broadleaf woodland.
Main Tree Species: Mature beech, oak, Spanish chestnut, sycamore, and other broadleaves.
Other Flora: Laurel, rhododendron and elder.
Fauna: Swans, duck and cormorants as well as red squirrel, pheasant and woodcock.
History: The site was once part of the Chartersis Estate.
Geology: Old red sandstone


Swiss Cottage
A delightful “cottage orné” built in the early 1800’s by Richard Butler, 1st Earl of Glengall to a design by the famous Regency architect, John Nash. Its interior contains a graceful spiral staircase and some elegantly decorated rooms. The wallpaper in the Salon, manufactured by the Dufour factory, is one of the first commercially produced Parisian wallpapers.
