Ashford Castle Hotel & Gardens, Cong, Co Mayo dates back to 1228, the gardens as we see them today consist almost entirely of the layouts conceived and executed by Sir Benjamin Guinness and his successors the Ardilauns from 1852 onwards. Comparing the early ordinance survey map and the later one in 1889 shows very clearly how the garden was created between these dates.

Westport House enjoys a superb parkland setting with lake, terraces, wonderful gardens and magnificent views overlooking Clew Bay, the Atlantic Ocean, Achill, Clare Island and Ireland’s holy mountain Croagh Patrick. It was built and is still privately owned by the Browne family who are direct descendants of the 16th century Pirate Queen, Grace O’Malley.
